Is it possible to Re-Ring the Beat engine
without pulling it from the vehicle?
Engine is smoking bad and one cylinder has
low compression

It is possible, but in my opinion its not worth the hassle trying to do it in the car. You've got to take the head off to get the pistons out. (which disconnects most of the pipe/wire) its just as easy to drop the block out and work on the engine out once you have got to that stage (leaving the gearbox in the car) You can then build the engine up (head on) while its out (make cambelt fitting easyier) and then lift the engine back in almost complete (just the inlet manifold to put on)

I agree, I can't see any reason why you would want to leave it on the car. Did you check the valves on cylinder one? You might have a hole. Anyway there is no room to work there and about 10 min into the job you will be pi$$ed off.
Are you in the States?

Thanks for the advise, we will pull the motor out first.
We did check all the valve settings. The compression is about 15 psi
low on cylinder number one and the car smokes badly when
going down the road. Engine seems to run good aside from
the smoking and my mechanic thinks there is problems with
the rings. We noticed the cylinder head has been taken off
in the past but I dont know when. The car has 120,000 kms on
the clock.
I am in Los Angeles.
Steve.
