View Full Version : Beat fun

Hi all,

I've been out most of the afternoon driving my Beat, with the top down.

In the past I've had a Fiesta XR2, Nova GTE, MR2 Mk1, CRX Mk2 and a CRX VTi and nothing compares to the sheer fun factor of the Beat.

I can honestly say that I've had the most fun I've ever had driving a car. It's so direct and so rewarding.

There's hardly any scuttle shake either, which was evident on my CRX VTi.

The cornering ability is nothing short of breath taking. Although another 20 BHP or so would be welcome. Just to keep up with the faster cars.

I've been driving most of the afternoon and I've only spent £8 on petrol!

I'm so glad I imported this car even though I had previously never driven one.

Glad you like it Dion,

Importing one without driving any was a bit of a mad move but looks like it was worth the risk then!!!!

Best description is that it's like an adult sized Go-Kart... Fits it perfectly... :D

I agree about the extra BHP though, there are bits available in Japan but not that many....

I'm looking into something at the moment but am unsure wether it will work for the beat or what the availablilty will be yet...

If it works out then you lot will be the first to know about it...

Hi Adrian,

I've a friend with a Beat who was talking to someone at a cruise, who is opening a import performance parts shop in Newcastle.

They are going to specialise in the "not so mainstream" Japanese Grey Imports, ie. Honda Beat, AZ-1 amongst others.

He reckons you can fix a 20 BHP increase NOS to a Beat without any harmful side effects. (What do our experts think?)

If this is the case, it would be perfect solution for the increase in power that we're looking for.

Hi Dion,

I spoke to a company about this last year, (before my laptop died and took all my messages with it...)

They recon that a 10 BHP would be as far as they would recommend due to the size of the engine...

When you think about it, 20 BHP is about a 31% increase which would put a lot of stress on the engine without further mods done to help...

Plus with such a close ratio gearbox, you would be getting to the limiter faster than you (I) would really want to...

Even a 10 BHP jet would be increasing things by about 15%...

------------------------------------------------------------------
Calculations worked out as:

100% / 64BHP * (64+Jet Size) - 100 = % increase...
------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not saying that it wouldn't work though... If done properly then it would (should) be quite effective in frightening other road users.

Well thats my opinion on the subject.... Anyone else???

Hi Adrian,

Maybe rather than fitting the NOS, would a performance exhaust and air filter give us the 10BHP or so that we're looking for?

Even a Japanese import ECU would help. It's just hard finding a Japanese exporter.

When I had my CRX delSol SiR, the air filter added 10BHP. The HKS cat back exhaust another 5BHP. That had 158BHP as standard. I noticed a massive gain (more in noise, which was awesome), especially when the VTEC cam came in.

A Beat with a 660 VTEC engine, now I'm dreaming!

Dion,
I have fitted a HKS exhaust (from the cat back as I didn't want to tamper with the ecu) and a free flow induction kit. The car certainly feels faster but that could be down to the increased noise giving the impression of speed. But as an estimate I think the car now does 0-60 in around 9 seconds and seems to get to the 140 km/h cut off much quicker. The car now seems to pull better from low(ish) revs in top and feels more flexible. The parts I have are available at www.tdi-plc.com.

Jason,

I've seen this Beat before and it's a monster! Must've cost a small fortune to put together. But very nice.

John,

How loud is the HKS cat back exhaust and HKS air filter?

Does it sound raspy, like a sports bike with a race can on?

I've had a HKS hiper cat back exhaust pipe on a CRX and it sounded awesome.

Only thing I didn't like about it was that the tail pipe was the size of a drain pipe. When I started the car in a morning, a moggie would shoot out of the exhaust!

Dion,
The exhaust is quiet a bit louder, its a twin tail job with each pipe about 3" (one at each side of the car) in diameter so it looks good too. The sound is nice and burbly and from 5000 rpm it howls nicely, but if you are going to be doing a lot of motorway miles it could get irritatingly loud at 70 mph but its excellent for quick country road/traffic light blasts. The induction sounds are drowned out by the exhaust but at low revs you can just about hear it sucking in the air. The mods have reduced the fuel economy by about 5 mpg to about 32 mpg but thats a small price to pay for the increase in the fun factor.

John,

It sounds exactly what I'm looking for.

I will be doing a fair bit of motorway miles but I'll turn the stereo up if the noise gets too much.

When I have the necessary funds, I will give TDI a ring.

Thanks,

Dion

Hmmmm,
I need a new exhaust....

I used to have a 4 pipe system on my old red beat, any ideas what it was??

What other options are there besides the mugen?

(oops beaten to it again, oh well here it is anyway)

Hi Paul,

As mantioned, Torque Developments sell HKS stuff for the Beat,

http://www.tdi-plc.com/

But as always, it isn't cheap...

Otherwise you have the option of :

A custom exhaust from places such as a Powerflow Franchise (probably what your one was Paul)

or

Importing one of the few different types available in from Japan...

There are a few available out there in Japan but it is a case of getting them to ship things over to us...

Hope this helps

BTB exhaust have the pattern for a beat exhaust, they quoted me £450+VAT for a S/S rear section as a one off and £350+VAT if you ordered 2 or more.

This is the exhaust fron Twin cam but it's not cheap at 80,000 yen (approx £450!)

I'm not sure if they will ship to the UK but it's worth e-mailing them to ask.
