tachometer and speedometer needle remove

I used a table fork to pry (lever) up my needles on my Crown Victoria.

I used a table fork to pry (lever) up my needles on my Crown Victoria.

I was told that you carefully have to lift the needle over the retaining pin, mark the position of the needle and the then lever up the needle. I am not sure if this procedure is correct for the Beat or if this is correct concerning other cars...
