Softtop Cleaning Advise Wanted

I have tried just about all potions and mixtures on the market and am becoming increasingly frustrated as I watch them all slide down the side of the paintwork when it rains, leaving some horrible black gunk, that I have to polish off. I found a link a while back with some ideas, but it never concluded.... What is everyone using, and how's the success rate? I did see a post about using black nugget, is anyone sucessfully using this. It's driving me to distraction!! Its a fairly old top, but....has to last at least a couple more seasons... Thanks for any advise anyone has in advance
