Just Beat it............ A new one

Initially saw this on gumtree and after getting in contact with the owner it was on ebay where someone had won it but hadn't made contact for over a week then when they did show up picking lots of small faults up trying to knock the price down which was already cheap for a Beat imo.

Bit of background history imported 2003, cat c write off in 2011 due to someone in a bigger car opening their door into the little beats rear quarter on the driver side resultant damage about the size of an A5 sheet of paper improperly valued car meant it was written off. So it is very very important you get agreed value for your car insurance wise if possible imo anyway back to the car had the car picked up from Sundbury on Thames Surrey and delivered to Oswestry, Shropshire by my friend Matt who runs Bournemouth 24hr Recoveries.

Had a few hours on it already and just basically took the seats out hoovered everything underneath, hoovered the seats and replaced a few missing screws. From initial impressions I will need 2 new mirrors, a new hood or a good second hand one possibly a new instrument cluster as mine seems to have the sticky rev needle problem, driver side front caliper is sticky so going to upgrade to 240mm civic brakes. Bodywork is so so need to sort the arches out as both sides have a tiny amount starting to come through but that will be a sand down rust treat and paint job, will need a new drivers door as it has rotted through on the bottom somehow and the paint is pretty bad all round looks ok in pics but in person it's bad but I am thinking of wrapping or getting some paint in and doing the whole car myself a different colour.

Clocks are still in KM, a service wouldn't go amiss tbh, aircon just about still works, alloy wheels if anyone is interested are for sale to 14s rear 13s front.

Going to look for more bits for myself tonight but won't be till end of this month start of August before I put the order in.

Decided to change insurance over and tax the car yesterday, rushed around to get everything sorted in typical fashion when I was ready to go the car wouldn't start immediate thoughts turned to dodgy relay or ecu changed both and still did it. Bit stumped at this point as there was fuel in the car but stuck fresh fuel and some cleaner through it and boom started first time and ran well.

Went to visit a mate who'd never seen one before loves this now, offered to lower the car for me so looks bit better now but will take another step when wheels show up. First impressions after not driving one for a few years are it isn't as slow as similar powered cars I've had recently (60bhp 1.1 106, 64bhp 1.3 Logo) the noise is very addictive and in all honesty it does get up to speed well enough.

Few issues to sort out are sticky rev counter, wire up fog light to one of the reverse lights and repaint said light so rear is tidier are the ones that come to mind right away. Will need 2 new mirrors, new hood and fit new brake setup but they will come in the next few weeks.

Oh since I've got an ecu spare (the original one) that although still runs the car looks to have had questionable repairs in the past as you can see damage on the board (pics in the week) will be donating it's life towards becoming a standalone ecu. Will mean that when I eventually get the exhaust system sorted out I can get working on a new type of inlet trumpet / funnel.

I solved my fog light problem by purchasing two slim LED fog light strips from ebay that with a slight trim fitted nicely into the rear bumper slots. I'll take a photo and post it for all to see. Nice and bright and really unobtrusive.

So 262mm brake conversion, coilovers and new wheels have shown up. Colour won't be to everyone's liking but since I am plasti dipping the car pearl white I think it will suit nicely

Still got a few things to come from Japan namely new mirrors, new driver side vent, new speedometer, new hood plus bolts and side clips eta for that lot at a guess is going to be 2 weeks ish, hopefully be ok to use in next week or so regardless.


Got tyres sorted and wheels fitted rear no problems but fronts needed spacing by 8mm to clear will get some proper 10mm hubcentrics when I can. Excuse the red bits still work in progress sorting the bodywork out ready for plasti dip

spent 45min doing more wet and dry sanding on the painted side so it is super smoother than it was. Now that's done can see where most of the annoying little dings are which will get filled in think this is the method I will use for the whole car get it one colour roughly then work through the dings then more paint.

Be lucky to be at the meet tbh even though it is ages away need to hope over next few weeks that plenty of sun

Stuff is in customs so be next week for rest of stuff now but no worries as did most of the wet sanding today and sprayed the rear bumper up which in all honesty came out really well just need a fine wet sand to see if there are any light spots but otherwise the coverage on this looks much better than I thought it would be. White base coat has certainly helped, all being well tomorrow I will do the front wings, door shuts plus the boot.

Right on mine today I did the sills and door shuts, not a great job needs sanding in places but it looks ok

Also gave the front bumper a final very fine wet sand before putting down the final coat glad to say this time it's got decent coverage in all areas as per the rear bumper both of which will get a few days to harden a bit before anymore wet sanding to get them smooth.

Also put a bit more paint on rear quarters and they are both coming up quite well so few more weeks and it will be ready to go :)

Temp steelies on plus more work done again another session of wet sanding to get more smooth, then bumpers and passenger side got done with another coat which was very good coverage that it's not patchy any more plus managed to do the rear latches/boot lid to.

Need more on the drivers side mainly on door and rear quarter as that's where most of the work needs to be done, managed to do the front wing to a level I am happy with to. Going to fit most of the stuff over the weekend hopefully mot in week then trax next weekend as a work in progress 50 shades of yellow machine.

more stuff done, more yellow.

Got the rear lights back in, re-wired one of the reverse lights to act as a fog keep rear end nice and neat I think. Painted the bonnet so it looks a more uniform yellow now also painted the front cross member black, will probably do the whole underside black when I got time.

Mudflaps plus silly tiny mirrors have been fitted, more on the driver side been done to. Cleaned the interior out a bit to, will fit new hood and bolts on Thursday all being well

Now everything is current here not much has changed went to trax a few weeks back managed to get there and back fine no problems, although a few things are in the pipeline to improve things. Seeing as temp and fuel gauges are iffy going to fit some after market ones at least then the temp will be more accurate and fuel gauge will gain a low warning light for the last gallon.

Used the car on and off since as rear visibility is dire due to the rear screen not being great think I will get a mx5 screen sewn in, also driving the car to work few weeks back temp gauge was all over the shop got to work found I had a water leak right at where the rear coolant pipes are on the bracket looks to have rotted through which is where it brings use to now!

Spent a few hours this morning removing said pipes which was a pig of a job to do which involved removing everything out the front to get to a few pipes which where not accessible from underneath, rounded heads snapped heads plenty of surface rust etc and this is the result

Going to be getting the pipes made up in alloy integrating temp sensor adapter near the front so in terms of wiring and routing everything will be very easy. Also now I know what I want long term engine wise I'll put money aside for it but get cracking on with developments of the e07a hopefully it should yield some more power and better mpg.

As the norm now more parts are en route :)

I opened the boot to put it on and it had been shredded by a mouse (or mice??). My garage backs on to a field so I know it gets 'visited' during the night. Thought they'd be on the shelves not in the Beat. It could have chomped through the CD Changer wire...or worse! Boot carpet unappealing thank goodness. Baited all since and apart from the bait disappearing, all's OK. :explode:

Managed to wire the amp in today no problem but passenger side speaker keeps working and then not working if everything goes well you would get plenty of space extra in the car

Done the new mirrors satin black they look a million times better than the little ones, just need to fine wet sand it all but ability to see rearward restored lol Also started getting the glue off the doors started with the passenger side with maximum success :) sprayed the mankey glue with wd40 let it soak a bit then wiped most of it off repeated and voila nice inner doors with no glue, so looks like I can spray the insider of the doors properly now.

ECU rom chip kit speed limiter removed standard rev limit kept and a slightly modified map to take into account basic bolt on engine mods like manifold exhaust and funnels, rear bumper lip and a different front bumper to the usual mugen and rs-mach ones although they are both rare in themselves over here.

Hardtop soon to, went with this choice of front bumper as compared to the rest cost was reasonable and it looked decent enough

I considered a hard top for mine, but kinda defeats the purpose of a convertible car, so I opted to order a new OEM roof instead.

Problem I got with the car over here Bob is no garage to keep it in and when it does rain the seals aren't that great, can get new seals but talking around £220 shipped a new hood is around £250 with getting the velcro straps made up for it plus the rear plastic window isn't good either was going to replace that with mx5 rear glass but to do that and get it mounted properly talking another £60-80.

Can see where you are coming from though but with the plans I have the hardtop is the way to go

mike it's made by a company over there called us racing, yeah I looked at loads of front bumpers and preffered this will go with the final look quite well. We should share a box in new year as I need sideskirts lol

Front bumper and rear lip pretty much done both got sanded done to smooth any imperfections then more paint added and smoothed again

Coolant system all re-bled after re-fitting the coolant pipes new temp gauge is wired in and seems to be working, will strip the interior down tomorrow in preparation for some welding. Got some small bits on way from Japan before hardtop is ready just new bonnet hinges plus front mudflaps don't think I will be importing sideskirts till next year due to the cost of delivery.

Also few plans on the engine tuning side which mean things could be quite good next year :)

Cambelt snapped, so engine conversion happening much sooner than later. Got plenty to do in the mean time this will give me a chance to strip down any unwanted parts from the car, start taking the engine out and other bits that won't need needed with the new engine. Irony is the below was ordered well over a month ago and now is here, will be fitting it regardless give the interior a chance to return to normal.

Did look into an e07z turbo engine but for the cost it was cheaper to go with one of Hondas many other choices.

Unpackaged properly, mid removal and then hood plus all fittings etc removed.

Side brackets plus rear bracket bar removed the ones the bolts go into for the hood and rear screen, relatively easy job to do. Removed the front hook clip brackets to reuse on the hardtop otherwise managed to fold the rood down ready for packaging up when it goes off to Mikei after Christmas.

Mid fitting pretty happy with the quality few adjustments needed but otherwise ok side screws needed help with people pushing down to get holes to line up but otherwise rear ones easy to fit.

Last two show it fitted will need minor fiddling to get perfect otherwise after new engine is sorted in new year sideskirts plus rear spoiler to be added. Spoiler choice critical to get overall look right

Stupid fast and furious spoiler held in place for a laugh way to big, will go for a standard one or a dc2 one eventually, new wheels on way engine should be fixed over next few weeks may be running again before May, otherwise will concentrate on getting bodywork better this time.

Still got a handful of things to get from Japan when money allows like alloy rad, silicone hose kit, suspension and a properly done ecu. Hopefully with the colour change I have in mind it will look quite decent

EDIT - after further investigation I can confirm the hardtop is actually a RS-Mach one it seems like they did this type for a limited time but I can confirm this one is amazingly good :)

New gauges from Mikei and sorting the wiring as mentioned fixed the fuel gauge issue had to remove hardtop to do the wiring side as I had to lift the engine bay covers but otherwise all in very productive day getting everything binned from inside the car I didn't need sorting the small issues that I didn't sort months back and deciding what colour it's going to be redone.

Hi Gavin, glad you are up and running again! Can be a bit of a money pit...... but a trip out with the roof down and who cares? Forgotten! Appreciate all your help. MOT comes round too quick (June) but reckon it's a pass :) Well it will pass regardless lol. Mechanic mate over in the wk returning my Jazz after warranty work and I told him my Beat needs help to tick over from cold for a short while. Seems the air temp affects it. He identified something or other as the cause. It's always fine then for the rest of the day. Glad he knows how to put it right. I think he said something about a part having a build up and false sensing like it's OK over time so sounds possible. He's always been spot on before. Yeah saw that program, if its sensors you need let me know may have a handful spare got loads of motivation back now.

Well amazing how when you do a small job and it gives you the kick start in motivation that you needed long ago, in this case sorting the stuff in the previous update did the trick.

Anyway pics, ghetto spray booth mode engaged, surprisingly everything came out relatively ok, quite chuffed with the bumpers, wings, skirts and rear lip. Boot and spoiler need bit more work but that's this weekends job, doors are only temp as found a pair of better condition ones which will be sprayed up off car so these will get a quick spray to get it one colour.

Both rear quarters need filler in places to sort dents out but yeah pics

Must agree , loving the blue Gavin. Did the side vents need much prep before painting? Got my faded red ones off and was going to wrap them black but don't fancy stripping the mesh bits off.

Yeah the contrast isn't to bad, as for vents just need to sand them down medium primer satin black once happy leave a day or so then fine sand

Many years ago had white side vents with white steelies for a few weeks. :p Looking at wet tranfer printing in carbon effect.

So bit more progress driver side rear quarter is as best as it can be without major work needs another 2 coats of paint, passenger side is much better again 2 coats and it should be ok. Rear bumper and under lip got another coat of paint also, the side skirts will get another coat to closer when I refit them, got 2 mint doors off Beardo a few weeks back will spray those off the car over the next few weeks.

Bonnet is so so will make the best with what I have there, windscreen surround and hardtop will get done satin black when it's near enough ready to go back on the road. Interior haven't got to much planned still going to find a mini amp and put it where original HU was and just run mp3 player through that direct to the speakers, but to keep it tidy will try and get an oem centre blank if one comes up. Seats I will keep for now but will eventually get some fixed back or recliners from Japan, I am still going with the 262mm front brake conversion over the next few weeks as well just need to modify the carriers a bit before fitting.

Going to be honest all in it was actually an easy job I think from start to finish it only took me and my mate 2hrs to drop the engine out that was subframe and rear arms off the lot. Dropping it off Monday at the garage to get it rebuilt will get the spare head port/polished and skimmed plus a deep clean done on it before it goes back on.

As always there are parts on the way for it, full silicone hose kit, 55mm funnels, customer induction kit to the side vent, clutch kit and aluminium radiator. There are some extras I am looking at probably to do over winter that would be rear anti roll bar kit and braces 100% will get front and rear, with the front having the cross bracing section with master cylinder stopper built in. Unsure if I will go for the under side ones will need to make a proper list up and see if they will be worth the time.

Some more updates engine has been stripped did a proper job and bent all 12 valves no piston damage and bottom end is good. Head has been ported and now off the the machine shop to get valves relapped, head skimmed and new valve stem oil seals. Will have the inlet manifold port matched as well plus the itbs clean out when I dropped them off, otherwise redid the boot lid in satin black looks better than I thought it would tbh for some reason every time the blue went down it just reacted despite cleaning it drying it and panel wiping it.

I'll get that finished tomorrow and hopefully make a start on finishing the spoiler to once done its the turn of both rear quarters to be sorted out, then the new doors, bonnet and more coats of paint on the skirts. Can not remember if I mentioned it or not but sorted a full silicone hose kit, dizzy with after market ht leads and 55mm funnels with hindsight I should of got the 75mm ones.

Managed to sort a new clutch release bearing to possibly have a 3 branch manifold on way to see how that pans out, also as you will see below the reason for selling the adjustable shocks and 30mm springs as I managed to sort some coilovers at a good price. Proper nuts came for the wheels so got those fitted, refitted spoiler to see what that was like same with the skirts and side vents. Did a rough job on the bonnet to see where it needed work but overall no reactions so happy, fiddled with the rear coilovers a bit more got height set nicely now I'll do front once I've taken what I need to remove etc etc but final adjustment comes when engine is back in, boot is going blue again since the black did a good job of smooth everything over.

Still rough but it is getting there with it all back together I do love it more now.

Cheers guys, Paul no these are the coilovers I won the ride height of the lowering springs on car is on one of the previous pages they need to go now since the coilovers are on.

I think my rough list goes something like this for the bodywork

2 more coats of paint on each quarter panel
2 more coats of paint on the boot lid and spoiler
1 more coat of paint on each side skirt
4 coats of paint per door and same on bonnet

Tomorrow morning need to make a start on removing the rest of the aircon system and fit what silicone hoses I can, then provided weather is ok will do as much paint as possible.

Done some more both rear quarters and boot lid now sorted all that had to be done was final smooth wet sand then paint, had to redo spare pass front wing as door dropped the wrong way when it came off, fitted both new doors, vents got cleaned and more paint.

Doors still need final fine wet sand and last bit of paint, mirrors still need to be done, bonnet haven't even had a proper go yet needs plenty of work that. Engine is still be worked on but should be near enough there now, possibly it will be running again by September.

Managed to get a bit more time on it today removed the rest of the aircon system so pipes under the car, engine bay, aircon rad plus pipes under the bonnet all gone. Also took the rad off and modified the fan housing slightly so the hoses had a better fit, whilst under the front end had a poke around and it's all solid still thank god lol cleaned up a few flakey areas and treated with kurust then zinc primered.

100% will be getting an alloy rad at some point current one is still just ok but showing age now, future stuff for next year will be adjustable rear control arms then some braces front and rear. Undecided on seats right now still thinking something different on that front.

Pic of the front below, quite empty now need to clean it up tomorrow but I think will do it satin black where I can. Once I figure out how the dash comes out I will take the aircon box thing from behind there out to, I think with the compressor, pipes, rad, space saver wheel plus removing all the soft top mounting frame, soft top itself then fitting the hardtop I've saved around 20kg all in.

The soft top with frame etc was surprisingly heavy when I removed it and the hardtop was much lighter than I thought it be to, getting closer to being on the road again hoping mid September it will all be done.

Engine is all back together now :) New head was a bit pitted so had to skim a bit more than normal off otherwise valves relapped, new valve stem oil seals, new cam and crank seal plus a small amount of port work with the water pump, tensioners and belt all done to.

Not far off now with only a few things from Japan to come then it can be finished off, will probably drop the engine back in next weekend but hopefully by end of September everything should be done and I can re-mot it then use it from October again.
