Well I finally bit the bullet and had Mr. Honda replace the cambelt for me - If I'm reading the japanese service book correctly it was last done 7 years and 60,000kms ago so it's probabley about time. The water pump and the tensioner were both on the way out so they replaced them at the same time - total bill just over £600!!!
(The bill did include £24 for the 'privelige' of using one of their Jazz's for 2 days - an experience I could have done without)
...anyway the engine is now loads quieter and I can stop worrying about the belt going, and I dont have to drive a Jazz anymore:D
