got 2 to do so nothing too extortionate please:)

I've got plenty of caps if you wanted to do it yourself. £5 a set posted.

caps aren't a problem' thanks Mylee anyway, RS around the corner.
with sausages for fingers & struggling to even solder wire, a visit to my local 'old school' TV repair shop is brewing

dropped ECU in Mon pm, picked up wed 3pm.
all went OK apparently apart from 1 of the caps had leaked so bad it had rotted the PCB! 'man' has looped a wire from Cap to where it goes & wrappped in heatshrink

all for the sum of.....£12.50 inc Caps :)

put back in this afternoon, started OK, no misfire, stutter & the 'greyish' vapour appears to have gone & the smell of fuel has gone as well.

just need to check timing either tonight or tomorrow & then book in for MOT.

spare ECU will be dropped in sometime this week although on second look parts of it look very bad.

Fan bloody tastic!

When I got a quote from an ECU specialist they wanted £200. Robbing Bar stewards.

For £12.50, it not worth the hassle of trying the job yourself

that sounds ace - maybe this fella could have a nice sideline in ECU repairs! brilliant news that the little chap seems to be sorted as well.

ECU no2 dropped in fri 4pm, picked up sat 12.30 :)

replaced all caps, cleaned up corrosion where caps leaked, same price!
just need to check on car over w/e, fingers X'd
when car was purchased, last owner had ECU done but EM light stayed on, no faults logged either. apparently one of the caps was put in reverse polarity & popped soon after

will update when tested

With all this talk about ECU's I thought, maybe, I may as well just check mine to verify. I mean, only 47,000 miles. Also Main relay. Right?
result: 3 Capacitors were bad and 1 was leaking, pending pcb damage. The main relay soldering was questionable. With new caps installed, and relay fixed up...
it still runs like a top!....:)

tried no2 ECU today, works OK but EML still on, obviously something wrong somewhere.
at least i know caps are OK & is good for a spare.

I just took possession of my silver 1994 Beat Z today. The dealer thought the ECU needed the usual work because the CE light stayed on. So the caps and the big IC were replaced and the EC light is still on. I assume he did the error code thing because he says now that the problem is the distro. A new one is on order and I hope that will be end of story. I paid about $160 for the ECU work - at least I will be able to rule it out in case of future problems.

Anyway I am very very happy with my "new" car because it does look and run like new. 83,000 kms with timing belt replaced at 80K. Original radio (40W) and Clarion CD changer work fine, and a cheap cassette adaptor and mp3 player also work well in the Gathers unit (I threw out all my cassettes a few years ago.....) Aircon seems to work too, not that I intend to put the hood down while I am alive. Slightly wrong size Michelins, but that can wait. I'm amazed how strong it pulls from low revs, and idles at 900 rpm after warmup. Midship amusement, here we come!

normal idle is 1200 rpm though, make sure it's checked after distributor is done

speaking of low revs when warm......

my beat doesn't seem quite right, when its warm and i lift off the throttle the revs dip down to about 1000 and very, very slowly (over a couple of minutes maybe) rise back up towards 1200, it also just generally feels like there's some resistance somewhere under acceleration.
