Fitting a standard size audio unit

I'm thinking about fitting a standard size audio unit to my Beat and the easiest option seems to be centre console replacement. Does anyone have any advice on availability of these and how difficult the job is to fit a standard size audio unit?

I have a Pioneer unit under the dash/steering column with a steering wheel mounted remote. This is a few years old though. There appear to be current models with remotes that could be mounted on the tunnel near the gearshift. I have also seen a unit which separates the front panel from the rest of the works. I would say that unless you already have something you want to adapt it would be worth a look in a good ICE store and see what the possibilities are

Single and double DIN console units are available from Japan, and are very pricey ($200+) A few here have opted to fab their own, or to install in various locations. Check out the AUDIO threads here, or Japoo auctions. Cash, and/or fabrication talent will determine the outcome.
The stereo wiring is painless as you can get an adapter plug and just plug into the existing harness. :)

Thanks guys, those are some pretty interesting examples bigB thanks for the link. I'm on mac too so no worries :-) I think I'll take the car round a couple of ICE specialists and see what they have to say before I make my move.

Pls see attachments. The sides of the stock cover can easily be cut at the top and bottom of the radio cut out; the side segments spaced approx. 3/16' further apart, both sides; then re-attach. I used the metal frame guide of the new stereo as a template
