Just bought the Silver Beat from Lee. A couple of problems though, the yellow engine management light comes on intermittently, no noticable fall off in performance and all fluid levels okay, any ideas? Is there a handbook/ manual availalable.
Rattle from the engine on tickover, sounds like a water pump bearing, any ideas?

Try depressing the clutch on tick-over. If the rattle goes, it must be the gear train and not the engine. Just a thought.

Thanks, tried that one, release bearing/gear train is fine

I found Andrew Fishers useful thread on codes and wired mine up for a test. The light did not flash, simply stayed on suggesting that the ECU is at fault? I am reluctant to ignore the fault as it could possibly cause problems further down the road and would welcome any advice.

It's definitely the yellow one not the red one?

Yellow as they come I'm afraid!

I have subsequently spoken to the ECU doctor courtesy of Andrews thread and he seemed unfazed about it and said just to use it for the summer! I plan to hibernate the car for the winter and will get it done then unless anyone more knowledgable suggests otherwise!

I suspect the ECU fault is upsetting the mixture as it is running a bit rich which is at least better than running weak!

possible capacitor death?

Buy yourself a new ECU, not worth the bother of repair the tracks will more than likely be corroded away. and various capacitors popped.

This is really good advice: I tried to repair: waste of time. Bought a new ECU from Honda: The Beat runs like a dream. £ 500+VAT, I am afraid, but well worth it.

Cheers guys looks like a new ECU is the sensible answer. Very chuffed with the Beat in all other respects so it is the least I can do! Anyone got a part number?

H37820P36003 = ECU £500 + VAT
H39400SS1003 = RELAY £ 55.39 + VAT
My local Honda main dealer has no problems in accessing the parts fiche for the Beat. Most item are stocked in Belgium and take about 3 days. If the parts have to come from Japan it will be 3-7 weeks.

Cheers Robertobini, I assume the relay is the ECU power source? Does this usually fail too? I have just bought the car and not had a proper look round it, I must confess I have not yet "found" the ECU, where is it located?
On further thoughts, there must be a good few Beat owners running around with "intermittent" MIL illumination which must mean something is not right and their engines will not be running at optimum efficiency. I can understand this as mine seem to be running fine, tickover is perhaps on the high side at 1400 rpm and it seems to be running a bit rich but otherwise :-))
Tom
PS Much appreciate the help.

The ECU is behind the passenger seat behind the carpet ;)

LOL, thanks. I did find a lockable plastic cabinet there, didn't think to look behind!

There is no stock of the ECU in europe at the moment, so could take a while to come from Japan.
Fuel Pump relay is in stock.

Thanks Steve. Is the fuel relay part and parcel of the ECU package? Seems a little odd to me but there again I am a newbie to the marque.

Fuel pump relay is quite common to fail, causing non starting when hot, so probably worth replacing if you ar going to replace ECU (sits next to ECU) just to avoid any future problems.

Looking further into ECU replacement, I note that uprated ones can be bought on Yahoo Japan. These have uprated condensors, uprated solder and the option of a sport chip/normal - I would specify a normal chip. Buying a new Honda one is an option but this does appear to be a weak point in the manufacture so might I be better with an uprated one?

Okay, management light, no blinks suggested new ECU. Replaced capacators. Refitted ECU. Engine management light comes on after a bit. Did the fault code test, now it blinks one short flash I think but I am not sure how long should the pause be between flashes? imho there is quite a long pause before the next flash. This suggests the oxygen sensor, where is it located? Any help appreciated.
Tom
PS Car still running fine, revs well, exhaust a wee bit sooty but nought dreadful

Found the sensor in the exhaust assembly, they seem to be very pricey so will need to be sure that is the fault showing!

Though sensors can be generic, it would appear the one for the Beat is unique. Best quote so far is £260 but still looking. Have also been told that there is a Bosch sensor rebuild possibility so I will be investigating that too. Part Number is 36531 P36 003 for the O2 sensor.

Just had a new oxygen sensor installed yesterday to pass our air emission program. Bosch #15710 that fits a Honda Accord worked flawlessly. This sensor requires the female plug-in at one end as there is a male version and was $100 can (50 pounds). Also had a 100 ohm resistor in map power curcuit installed but i don't have the technical savvy to tell you why this is good...something to do with consistent voltage for a steady sensor read.

I have found someone that will fit a Bosch sensor, if I send them my old Honda one so they can swap the leads, quote so far is less than £30! I was going to wait until it was done and worked (or not) before posting the detail. Useful to know the Accord unit fitted, you've lost me a bit with the resistor etc but I will mention it when I send it away for refurb, thanks.

Just a quick additional enquiry here.......is replacement of the ECU a simple task of whipping the old one out and slotting the new one in, or is it more complex than that?
Never had the seat out of ours to have a look!

The ECU provides a steady 5volts to the sensor. I think the idea of inserting a resistor is to fool the ECU into thinking the engine is consuming more air than is actually the case. It then increases the fuelling so you have a richer mixture. This may give a little more power at the expense of greater fuel consumption and higher emissions.

Sent my oxygen sensor to Lambdapower in Yorkshire, their do-it-all replacement was not suitable but they did manage to find a suitable Honda one at £89. Now fitted and been on a test run, guess what, no MIL light :-) Very chuffed and hopefully that is that bit sorted! Next the water pump...........

Incidentally, going the Honda parts route would have cost about £550 for the ECU and £260 for the sensor, both plus vat making a total of about £931. My bill so far is £130. I can of course see the wisdom of new parts but this car is a hobby hence I am trying to keep costs in check and it is not my prime means of transport.

I think it was a Civic but I dont know the year or part number. I left it up to them and they looked for a compatible spec. I though they were very helpful and as lambda specialists they were bound to do better than me! A Google will find them, Lambdapower.

Thanks Steve, that is the box it came in, it may or may not be the right number. Best bet if anyone needs one might be to check with Jamie @lambdapower before progressing.
