My tach needle just seems to bounce rather than give an accurate RPM reading. I don't think this is a cable drive. Sometimes after a little drive it returns to normal. Anyone had a similar problem? Thanks.

Assuming the engine is steady and only the tach is affected, I would check the connector at the source of the signal, the distributor

Thanks so much for the tip. I'll take a look there tonight, hopefully a loose connection and not some odd ECU malfunction.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll post this in case anyone else has this problem.
99% of the time, a bouncing tach on any Honda is the ignitor. The most common fix for this is to clean the terminals at the connection and re-apply some dielectric grease to prevent corrosion and seal out moisture.
In the case of the Beat it is not found in the distributor, it is mounted on the firewall. The Beat shares the same ignitor as the 88-91 Prelude, Part # - 30550-PH3-004
