A friend of mine is looking for a Beat with a broken engine or gearbox for a project.

Anyone know of any that are under £800?

Sadly, the engine on my little toy gave up the ghost last week. A misfortune for me but it may fit your friend's needs. The car is J reg (1991). It has just passed an MOT, two days before the engine gave out. I've had it for two years. The hood was replaced soon after I bought it and is still in good nick. The exhaust was replaced about 4 months ago. As you would expect the seats and carpets are worn but otherwise it's a reasonable car inside. If you're interested I am based up near Skipton in North Yorkshire and would be prepared to accept a reasonable offer from someone who would want to give it a new lease of life.

How many miles or km did it have when the motor went?

103,000km. I was on a run down to Oxford and the engine went after about 140miles. I had used it for several similar runs in the past without problem so I am not absolutely sure what went wrong. The car is 18-years old though and using it for long runs like that on a regular basis may have been asking too much. The problem was it was such fun to drive!

WhIteleopard. I'll look forward to hearing from your friend.

He said

"Ask him how much he wants for it, and what colour it is..... " :D

It's red with a black hood.

I'll take any reasonable offer but I am guessing around £300 to £500 would be fair.

These people may be worth a phone call to put the car back on the road at a reasonable cost.

Only problem is that you can buy a running Beat for about that much.

i saw that - seems like a reasonable price tho given that parts are the best part of 600-700 squid from honda? presuming it is a properly reconditioned unit of course.

I saw that too, he's been a mechanic for decades though, so I think he fancies the challenge. He did the first rebuild on my Beat for me, turned out to be the head gasket.

I am always cautious of these type of adverts, especially where something like a Beat is concerned. Probably fine for your everyday focus or astra.
From the picture it looks like a high volume workshop not a specialist.
