Hi folks

Does anyone know what the letter J refers to in regard to wheel width? Y'know, 14x5.5J, or 16x7J etc. We were discussing it at work today and no-one knew. Pretty bad form for a tyre shop that's been established for 25 years. I've been looking online but have got nowhere.

Yours, puzzled but unlikely to lose sleep

Marge

It's the tyre bead profile - it identifies the shape of the rim's contour where the rim and tyre meet. J is by far the most common, with JJ sometimes used on 4wd vehicles, older Jaguars used the K profile. All the gory details can be found in the Standards Manual of the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation, apparently.

That sounds like a fun book! I've seen a few JJ rims lately too. i think it might be case closed then. Thanks Karl
