Early on, I modified the stock muffler single-out by splitting it and wrapping a pipe around the fwd side for dual tips. Looked balanced but the tone remained tinny or hollow. Next, discoved the rear suspension torsion bar assy would not fit. For months, searched for a solution.
Happy to say I discovered a Empi muffler assy designed for an offroad VW priced at $80US (you guys can likely get it cheaper considering the weak US dollar). It's a double-wall construction barrel and tips of steel. If you want that low tone, this really works. Also, noticed more pep. Alone, it was too loud for me so I added a resonator. Still more spring than the original system at probably the same weight. Note that tight pipe forming is required to use the largest pipe diameter possible. Check the pics. Lots of unused space after removing the stock muffler assy.
