View Full Version : how to setup distributor timing ? help!

hi everyone, i rebuilt my engine, and removed my dizzy, not relising it does not have a one way key fitment(like most cars), instead its got a hex gearing system which allows to put the dizzy on anyway at any time, does anyone know if there is a correct way, like top dead end cyl 1 = cyl 1 spark point? cause not only do you have to get the right setting for the spark, but the ecu sensor in the dizzy also relies on it.

Engine at TDC no 1. - use timing pointer on flywheel to white mark.

align ditributor as in picture and insert.

As it goes in and engages on the gear the shaft should turn so looks like second picture.

So i use the white TDC mark to ensure the cam and crank are timed correctly. I then use the white mark as the reference for the dizzy install. When i line up the marks on the dizzy and install it at this point, the rotor will turn. This in essence should give the 20 deg before TDC which would then be the rotor pointing on the cyl1 mark on the dizzy at the same time the flywheel indicator is pointed at the red timing mark?

The red mark on the flywheel is really only used when using a fixed timing light.

All static timing should be set with white mark on flywheel and lines on the cam pulley lining up across the head, like this picture.

Ok well the cam pulley is aligned with the head, and the white T in the window. I note however that the distributor has a mechanical issue. When i align it with the hole and the marking the rotor is not aligned with the notch atop the dizzy. I think the mechanic tried to overhaul the dizzy and he replaced bearings etc, therefore the dizzy itself is misaligned.

Definitely need that new dizzy now.

I am back home and on this again, the red mark barely just lines up when using the fixed timing light and the dizzy is turned all the way clockwise. Do I need to move it one tooth over? then I would have to shift it one tooth anticlockwise?
