View Full Version : Have I broken it or mended it?

Up until now I was changing gear at 8000rpm because that's when the power tailed off. However today after about 15 miles of "spirited" driving it wooshed round past 9000rpm pulling hard all the way. I now have more power and torque all the through the rev range.

I've also lost quite a bit of the very agressive throttle responce but the engine is now a lot smoother than before.

I also had an annoying rattle that occured when accelerating from 50kph in forth, at 3000revs. The rattle now occurs at 2500 rpm. It will now cruise at 50kph in 5th.

Any ideas?

Might be worth taking the air intake apart, make sure you've still got all the bits your supose to there! lol

Other than that I guess only time will tell if you've broken it, or whether it might have been something stuck, or sticky.

If it's working now it would seem a shame to take it apart and try work out why!

Good idea. I will check air filter etc when I get back form scotland, just in time for christmas.

I wondered if the engine was no longer running the alternator. I had a friend with a 106 rallye that has a switch to disengage alternator on full throttle. It was worth about 8bhp at 6000rpm. Is this possible on a Beat?

I would suspect clutch centre plate springs, quite common, sort of metallic rattle 2500-3000 rpm and then goes as revs rise???

Yes, that's right. Is it worth fixing? Is it first signs of failure?

The rattle at 2500-3000rpm is very common. Mine has done it for 5 years with no ill effect.

just as extra info, we got rid of the noise after changing small bearing(placed in center of fly wheel) while using old clutch plate( didn't need replacing)

Maybe the exhaust was a bit clogged and the spirited driving burned the cr*p out.
